Aside
from eating organic food and using organic cosmetic products, people nowadays
are also searching for more sustainable clothing. The most common fabric
material used for garment manufacturing is cotton. Unfortunately, majority of
consumers are not aware that most cotton clothing available in the market is not
even made from pure cotton. In fact, most cotton clothing is mixed with polyester – a synthetic petroleum-based
fabric, to make the garment more durable and elastic.
Moreover,
conventional (non-organic) cotton production is quite infamous for its negative
impact to our environment. Often, toxic pesticides and synthetic fertilizers
are used in cotton farming which can pollute the soil, air and groundwater.
Industrial bleach chemicals (e.g. Sodium chlorite) are also used to make the
cotton fabric extra white in appearance. Bleach chemicals in fabrics are often
the culprit for getting skin irritations (e.g. eczema) when wearing clothes.
In
contrast, organic cotton is very eco-friendly. For a cotton to be called
“organic”, it must be free from harmful pesticides, fertilizers and chemical
bleaches which are serious threats to our environment and to the health of the
cotton farmers. Organic cotton is also known for its hypoallergenic properties
making it an ideal fabric material for people with sensitive skin.
Meanwhile,
take note that organic cotton is not as white in color compared to conventional
cotton since it’s not treated with bleach. Also, 100% organic cotton fabric is
less durable and less resistant to wrinkles compared to a mixed
polyester-cotton fabric.
There
are only a handful of clothing companies in the Philippines that produce
garments using 100% organic cotton. One of these companies is Organic.
