If you’re the type of person who doesn’t immediately wash his mug right after finishing his daily cup of coffee or tea, then your mug may now show signs of ugly brown stains. Based on my experience, no matter how hard you wash your mugs with dishwashing soap and water, the stubborn stains won’t come off. But don’t get dismay, there is a tried-and-tested method that will make your porcelain/ceramic mugs look brand new again. Believe it or not, all you need is one item that might be already available in your pantry – the baking soda (sodium bicarbonate).
Here are the steps:
- Sprinkle baking soda into the mug and add enough water to form a thick paste.
- Spread the baking soda paste all over the inside of the mug, concentrating more paste on areas with more coffee/tea stain.
- Let the baking soda paste sit for 5-10 minutes, then scrub the mixture with a sponge to help further remove the stains.
- Finally, wash the mug as you would normally do to rinse off the baking soda paste.
There
is a simple explanation as to why this method works. An alkaline solution (high
pH) is said to be effective at removal of coffee/tea stains which are acidic.
Baking soda is a mild alkaline having a pH of 8 and its abrasive nature really
helps a lot in getting rid of coffee/tea stains from porcelain/ceramic mugs.
